Greetings citizens!!! Husband Mike here again with the news and notes of last nights episode of WE TV's Amazing Wedding Cakes. In this issue, we tackled one of my favorite things in the world, comic books, with a spectacular super hero theme cake for Ally & Jon.
This dynamic duo met at a comic book store in what I can only imagine was one of those fuzzy slow motion moments where he looked up from a copy of Justice League while she peered over the cover of Buffy Season 8 and saw him in that silly trademark hat of his and it was love. Well, I imagine that, but I never asked to verify. Knowing my people, they were probably actually arguing over the Fantastic Four movie.
The cake was alternating layers of black and white with a fondant covering and hand painted elements. It was a lot of fun to design and execute, but was definitely one of those that took longer than we'd planned. Reva, Marc, and Karyn worked well into the night to get this just right. It was stressful, but the end product was exactly what everyone wanted. It had the "POW" factor with just enough "KABLAM!"
I really wish they'd shown off some of the details more last night. There were some really cool comic book panels and all the alien/ray gun elements, a lot of long hard work went into finishing this cake so if only there was a way to show them to the world... oh wait! This blog!
These hand painted "pages" were suitable for framing!
The cover before Ally & Jon's super hero identities crashed through it!
Holy matrimony topper in progress.

Big shout out on our inspiration for the ray gun element goes to our friend Atom! over at Eisner Award winning Brave New World Comics in Newhall, CA. This is my personal favorite comic shop ever and if Reva and I were to copy Ally & Jon and have a comic book engagement party, this'd be the place. Is it weird to have an engagement party like a decade after the fact? Probably. Along with his employees, they made this silly video about ray guns that gets me "ROTFLMAO" every single time!! As far as "ROTFLMAO," I think it's Flemish for really funny. Plus, I'm positive I bought all the comics we used for inspiration at Brave New World so they basically inspired like the whole cake and now that I've mentioned that, hello tax write of!!
Ally & Jon, however, met at the wonderful Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. It is a huge store filled with all kinds of eye candy. Unfortunately, the crew couldn't really film too much because the place is packed with a million different logos and trademarks and the clearance issues on that would have put all of us in the poor house! That wall of toys is quite a sight though, and Reva had to keep her sights on me to make sure I didn't make any unauthorized purchases once we delivered the cake. We did pick up that Meltdown t-shirt you saw Reva wearing during the interviews. Don't think Hollywood is all about freebies though, we paid for it. Hey, another tax write off!
The delivery itself was pretty easy actually. I even found parking on Sunset, on a weekend, right in front of the store!! The cake traveled well, especially that buttercream topper of Ally & Jon, and the ray gun was fully functional. Oops, I've said too much.
Reva and Marc goofing around in their capes was hilarious. Marc started it by bringing in the actual yellow and red capes and surprising Reva, so then Reva had me make her some tin foil wonder woman accessories so she could fly in and make Marc crack up. We stuck her on a Cambro and pushed her through and it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Watch for my how to make tin foil wrist bands video soon.
For those of you keeping count, yes Marc has now been "bleeped" 8 times so far this season. Who wants to take bets on the over/under for this?
And how about Marjie's treasure chest down in O.C.! Pretty awesome huh? She did a great job with all those accents and coins and such. We love seeing what all the other shops came up with as much as all of you because we had no idea what they were up to during filming. Everyone is doing such good work. Aren't we just the best little cake show?
Don't forget to tune in next week, same cake time, same cake channel as Merci Beaucoup tackles the mysterious wildlife of the land down under!!
