Sorry I missed my self imposed deadline for a Monday blog post everyone!! Lots of Holiday prep is going on around here, or maybe I just didn't want to say goodbye!!
Yes, we've reached the end my friends. The curtain has closed on the third season of Amazing Wedding Cakes and in celebration, we rocked your TV's to the core! You'll probably need to head out on Black Friday to get a new one 'cause we broke it with our awesomeness. Maybe? Just a crack? Hey gang, Husband Mic here with all the dishy dish on the grand finale of the show that bears are likenesses. We went out in a flurry of bright colors designed to pay tribute to the Indian heritage of our bride and the cinema world of Bollywood.
As we've proven week in and week out, we never shy away from a brightly colored cake, so when Lamees and Majeed came in wishing to pay homage to their heritage and the wildly popular cinema it creates, we practically jumped out of our chairs in dance. When I say "practically" I mean I stayed in my chair while those two knuckleheads danced around the bakery.
By the way, if you enjoy Bollywood, make sure you see Jodha Akbar. Absolutely incredible film!
Some of the fondant colors for the Bollywood tiers up above. After Reva colored those out, we decided to use a stryo base for a little added structure. The couple didn't need a lot of cake for the reception, so we thought a nice solid bottom layer of styro with a little shaping would give us some more height and keep the wobble to a minimum!
Here's a tip, we actually have a tub of "styro-icing" that we keep separated from our regular batch of crumb coat. That way we don't get any stray styrofoam pieces in anything intended for your stomach. Other than that, any styro separators or bases get the same fondant covering and decoration as the rest of the cake.
The fondant was the easy part of this cake! Now we had to tackle the miles and miles of piping required for the intricate details of each tier. (actual length of piping remains unverified) We didn't have an exact pattern we were trying to emulate, instead relying on our experience and freehand abilities to make each tier unique and mesmerizing;)
Lots of floral designs and hints at architecture etc.
The details were really going to have to be a team effort. Basically, anytime you see me step in to help, you know we're in a pinch! The fondant sequins weren't that bad though, and they looked really cool on the cake, so I'm always willing to step in and help with the awesome. While time consuming, we were all on the same page and it came together without much drama.
Ah yes, the "elephant legs" a.k.a. "Bam Bam" strikes again! While Reva did a little dry fit to check her progress on covering the columns of the tier lifter, Marc stepped in to "help" and shoved them down into place. Sometimes, two heads are not better than one! Once they were forced down into the cake, we couldn't remove them because it would have torn that layer up and all the detail work already completed. It was all okay in the end, because on the other side, sometimes two heads are better than one! With all the gold we were going to accent with anyway, we just went ahead and made the columns gold as well. Cake is ever changing, and sometimes your design has to go with the flow! It looks nice.
Aside from the detailed piping and the beaded accents, we also had a number of flowers on the cake. The floral component of Bollywood and especially Indian weddings works on a scale our wedding industry can only dream of! Flowers are everywhere and on everyone, so it was important to work some into our design.
The cake ended up being rather tall, as proven by this shot of our camera guru Ashley standing on a stool for a good look at the top. OSHA would have a field day with this scenario!!
The very top was a golden dome that you can see Marc piping around on the left of that photo up there. We used a lot of gold this season! It wasn't our intention, or even something we thought about till after all was said and done, but it makes sense. We do have golden personalities!!
The delivery was standard in that the cake went into the van easily! Once I got to the site, I had to follow an escort in a golf cart back through a series of dirt roads and trees to a small clearing that was like half a mile from my eventual destination. Okay, half a mile might be an exaggeration, but it felt like it! I used the rolling Cambro to bring it in over bridges and rocks and there were stairs and if a troll popped up to ask for a toll I wouldn't have been surprised. An employee of the venue showed me the way, but I had to go back for the top half and I totally got lost. Seriously, I did not pass a koi pond the first time! It was crazy, totally beautiful, but crazy!
Funny thing about the show, when you saw us shooting the cake, we had to do it in the shade because it was so hot in Southern California that day, and there was no cover for the cake to keep it from melting. I was laughing when I saw a couple of the shots because you could tell we had that thing sucked up against the building to take advantage of the 14" overhang and the little relief it brought from the heat! The temperature can be a real buzz kill for cakes around here.
On to the beauty shots!
Well, that's a wrap on the third season of Amazing Wedding Cakes! Thanks again to all our couples and our crew for a good time filming out little cakes so we can bring them to your living rooms. I think we learned a lot about the process after Merci Beaucoup premiered in the last season which made this one easier and more enjoyable. We are proud of our work and think it represents who we are and what we do. We make cake and we love it. Thanks for watching and be sure to stay tuned here on Happy Sugar Baking Land for news on all of us, the bakery, and of course the show. Take care viewer!! We love ya!
