Phew! I just had to break this one up because there was so much work! Hey everyone, Husband Mic here and welcome back to Happy Sugar Baking Land and our behind the scenes on the "Through the Looking Glass" cake for Season 3 of Amazing Wedding Cakes. I hope you had a chance to gander at the first half of the blog, but now, let's get to the glamor and the delivery!
We love this cake so much and it is such a good representation of what we do at Merci Beaucoup that I wanted to make sure we got plenty of photos from the beauty shots in the blog. (In case you haven't hear me say it before, "beauty shots" are when we take the cake to the studio where they set it up against the color background and spin it around to film it in all sorts of various angles etc. You usually see them towards the end of the show) Here's what I grabbed from that session:
I have a cool shot of Reva primping the cake before its close-up, but I'm gonna have to wait until after the season finale for that one as another cake can be seen in the background;) How about that artwork huh? You know, we sort of make fun of how many cake decorators clamor to let you know they are "an artist." Honestly, it comes off as pretty pretentious, but Marc really is an artist and while yes, we do make fun of him when he says it, we only do it cause he knows we love him. The difference with Marc is, he really is an artist, trained in illustration and so he can recreate things like Mindy's cat and C.J.'s white rabbit. If you are serious about decorating, some classes in drawing are highly recommended so you can offer things like this to your clients. That's my tip of the day!
The delivery was like an obstacle course! We took the cake out to one of my favorite little Los Angeles hamlets, Eagle Rock, where, like the super stars we are, they had reserved premiere parking for us right in front of the house!
We were then greeted by yes, a Hobbit door in the front yard!
Thankfully the cake did not have to go through there! Instead, we were met with a series of stairs up and then a dirt path going down to the bottom of their back yard! AND! We had to do all of this while being part of a parade! It was so much fun though, to have people dancing around as I walked backwards.... eeesh! I am not lying when I say I almost fell backwards at least twice. I've had the wobbly arm from carrying a really heavy cake before and been super tired after setting it down, but this was the first time when I thought "oh crap, we're going down!"
At the bottom of our cake descent were Terry and Linda who were being crowned king and queen by their family, that was why we had the crowns on the cake. The looks on their faces when they saw the cake is enough to make you want to do this job forever.
Yes, the gathering was filled with costumes! Seems to be a theme with our cakes? There were mad hatters and Alice, an army of faeries big and small, and a half horse thing that makes those pre-packaged costumes at the Halloween store look like a pile of you know what. Well, in the spirit of full disclosure to the Halloween store, Mindy and her friends did take home the Best in Show trophy at this year's San Diego Comic Con masquerade competition, so they're kind of big time.
Reva ended up jumping in after the initial slice to help dish out the deliciousness. We tore into that cake! There was nothing left when all was said and done. Well, nothing but happy faces!
The music you heard was from the awesome Celtic band the Wicked Tinkers!! I first heard of these guys driving south through the center of California when they're van passed by me and I saw "Wicked Tinkers: Celtic Music" on the side. Since that trip on the I5, I've been a fan of the Tinkers, seeing them at various Ren Faires etc. over the years, so I was giddy when C.J. told me they'd hired them to be the party's musical act. It was a big thrill to walk the cake past them and to listen to their tunes all night.
After the crew took off (to be honest, I think they were a little scarred of all the crazy revelry), Reva and I finally got the chance to sit down and enjoy the evening. We had good food, good drink, and C.J.'s daughter invited us to her petting zoo! It was those expandable sponge capsule things, so cute. We had such a good time as delivering cake to our friends always is. Being able to combine what you do for a living with how you live your life is always special. Thank you to Terry and Linda for letting us be a part of the first 40 and to C.J., Mindy, Rick, Pete, and Sophie for asking us to deliver this sweet surprise.
Since this episode aired and we posted our first half of the blog, I just have to say that Bronwen Weber contacted Reva to let her know she loved the cake and loves watching us on the show and to thank us for using her Cake Study stand! Our pleasure B-Dub! (That's my unofficial nickname for Bronwen. She knows nothing about it.) Thanks for making an awesome stand for us to play with!!
Look out! Only two, count 'em, TWO MORE EPISODES LEFT!! Yikes, where did the time go? Next week we storm into November with the "Gypsy Rose" cake. Be sure to tune in for all the buttercream and fondant covered excitement on Sunday and then back here on Monday for all my behind the scenes anecdotes. Also, be on the lookout for this surly crowd below. If you see them in the streets, back away slowly and alert TMZ;
