Hey gang, Husband MIc here with the skinny on this week's Silly Cake News! Have you guys seen the website Flickchart? In case you dont know, I am a bit of a cinemaphile and Flickchart is basically crack for cinemaphiles. On the site you are presented with an endless stream of head to head voting where you must pick one movie over another. What results is this list of your favorite movies based on each vote. What makes it addictive is how the movies are placed on your list (if you want say Star Wars in #1 it would have to go head to head with your current #1, or else it will only move up as far as the placement of the movie it wins against). The formula practically begs you to sit there all day. If you're building a website, that's the goal right? How can we do this for cakes.....
Well, as I spent way too much time on a Saturday voting, I noticed one of the movie posters that popped up for the Rocky Horrow Picture Show had a cake on it. Cakes on movie posters??!! Sounds like some SIlly Cake News to me!! Here's the one sheet in question:
As you can see, it is a special one sheet for the 10th Anniversary of the film. This immediately spun my nerd brain to another classic anniversary poster from a galaxy far far away...
I'm currently reading my Christmas gift of "The Making of Empire Strikes Back" book and there are some neat sketches of ideas for this celebratory poster but they eventually nixed artwork and went with a photo. Seriously, I need to see pix from this photoshoot!! But more pressing is the question "how many movie posters have cakes on them?"
As it turns out, with an impressive amount of internet searching over many, many days, the answer is about 40! Well, so far. I'm still looking, but until I deem my search complete, here are a few more movie one sheets with cakes in them.
Naturally I searched movies with "wedding" in the title first and found this international poster for Four Weddings with a small cake right in front of Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell.
Keeping with big time romantic comedies, this one features a devious Julie Roberts disposing of the bride on this wedding cake. You ever notice how often movie weddings feature last second bailouts from either the groom or the bride and everyone is totally cool with it? I've never been to a wedding where someone refuses to "forever hold their peace," but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't end well.
Love this rare French poster for Muriel's Wedding!
Standing your actors in cake seems to be a popular choice...
A movie called Cake, but of course!! Has anyone ever seen this thing??
Okay, so this is pie, but you gotta love this tiered wedding pie for the home video release of American Wedding. And yes, I too just noticed what the toppers are doing....
This film also uses the stacked idea to convey the complexity of a prenuptial agreement, which is also its title. Again, no one's ever seen this, but wait till you see some of the other movies I found! Till then, here's one more for this week which is our first non-wedding cake.
I would buy this one... seriously, I would. How great and sensational is that artwork? So funny, and clearly, not a cake made for eating.
Hey, I've got more, so tune in for the sequels to this Silly Cake News soon!!! Thumbs up! 5 Stars! A+! Man leaping out of chair clapping!! A must see!!
The last poster is definitely epic. If I still was a kid, I'll never look at birthday cakes the same way again.
