Hey everyone, Husband Mic here and the weekend is here! Not that that means anything to cakers;) Instead we are prepping for deliveries and last minute decorating and Chips Ahoy cookies. Yep, I bought some Chips Ahoy cookies, because even in a bakery, sometimes you just want cheap cookies. On to the silliness!
First slice comes from one of my favorite places in the Doctor Who universe, Cardiff. At Sugarswirlz in the Dominion Arcade, a woman was so upset her favorite cupcake was sold out, she attacked the shop! According to the owner (Sally Dodd), this crazed customer starting throwing cupcakes around at other patrons and employees and eventually grabbed Dodd by the hair before smashing glass displays!! Holy smokes, I had a woman slam some baklava on the counter once, but this is crazy! And for cupcakes? There not even real cakes people. God bless the Welsh....
Does it get sillier than real life cupcake wars? Yes. Second slice today is about a Paris man who befriended the elderly and drugged their tea cakes so he could pilfer their homes while they slept! Talk about organized crime. How do you even come up with a plan like this? I can barely map a driving route to Malibu, let alone schmooze my way into someone's home for tea and then inject the sweets with sleepy time juice. My favorite part of the story is the old lady who faked eating the cake and then pretended to sleep so she could catch him in the act! I like to imagine her beating him out the door with a baguette, cause you know, it's Paris.
In our third slice I ask the question "who isn't jumping on the cupcake bandwagon?" Turns out, the answer is no one! Recently, the popular "Fox News Republican Entertainment Channel" host Glenn Beck turned to the stunted cake treats to explain inflation or supply and demand or something about economics that a producer wrote for him. The "lesson" will be pretty flawed for any of you who sat through the most basic econ class in school, but it involved cake and was silly, hence it made Silly Cake News. (Note: My thinly veiled digs at Fox News are not a blanket condemnation of Republican views. I generally dislike all cable news networks as they worry less about content and more about advertising dollars, it's just that Fox is clearly still the worst)
Alright, let's leave politics out of cake and get back to a fourth slice! I wanted to draw attention to this little news blurb I spotted about a cake shop in New Zealand. Specifically, Christchurch. You see where I'm going with this? Divine Cakes and Desserts was hit hard by the recent earthquake that destroyed this town. Owner Janine Kenyon talks about mixers and ovens just bouncing around which is amazing because we all know how heavy those things are!! Only one of her four bake shops in the town survived, but thankfully none of her staff nor customers were seriously injured during the quake. And she still has weddings to do!
From all of us at Merci Beaucoup, we just wanted to reach out across the globe and wish Janine and her staff, as well as Christchurch, all the best in rebuilding and getting back to normal after this devastating disaster. Stop by their site, check out some cakes, and leave a nice comment or something! It's about community cakers, we gotta stick together!
That's it this week for Silly Cake News my friends. Thanks for stopping by and deliver safe this weekend... Don't eat Lazy Cakes and drive!!
